Apple’s AR Glasses Might Be Able To Tell When You’re Distracted

When Google launched their Google Glasses years ago, it was a rather exciting time, but ultimately the project kind of fizzled. Now it seems that Apple could be interested in picking up the mantle with their own set of AR glasses, but the question is, what kind of features might it pack to make it stand out from what came before it?

According to AppleInsider, they recently came across a patent that could describe a feature of the AR glasses, and this comes in the form of the glasses being able to detect the user’s “state”, like whether they are paying attention to what’s in front of them or if they might be distracted by something else.

The patent suggests that based on the user’s state, it can adjust itself accordingly. “A user’s state (e.g., distracted, attentive, etc.) while viewing content on an electronic device can have a significant effect on the user’s experience. Content creators and display systems may be able to provide better and more tailored user experiences that a user is more likely to enjoy, comprehend, and learn from based on being able to determine the user’s state.”

This means that if the glasses detects that what you’re watching right now is causing you to be bored, it could suggest something more interesting, and so on. It’s an intriguing idea, although it does feel vaguely invasive. Of course, whether or not this patent actually becomes a reality remains to be seen, so don’t read too much into it just yet.
