If you’ve ever used WhatsApp for the web or desktop before, you know that to sync up the app on your phone and computer and also to ensure you are who you say you are, you have to launch the app and scan the QR code. However, it seems that WhatsApp is now taking steps to make its service even more secure.
It now appears that if you want to log into WhatsApp for the web or desktop, you will need to authenticate yourself on your smartphone using biometric security. This means that there will be an additional step of verification to make sure you are the authorized user. For Android devices, this will come in the form of fingerprint scanning, while iOS users with Face ID cameras can also use it as an authentication method.
Once you’ve authenticated yourself, you can then proceed to login the usual way, which is to scan a QR code. This feature will be enabled by default so if you don’t want to go through these steps, then you’ll have to completely disable facial or fingerprint unlocking, which is probably not a good idea for various reasons.
Users will also be able to receive notifications whenever they login to their account through the web or computer, so if they aren’t the ones doing it, then it means that their account may have been compromised. This is a pretty standard feature so there are really no surprises.
