According to a WhatsApp spokesperson, “There’s been a lot of misinformation and confusion around our recent update and we want to help everyone understand the facts behind how WhatsApp protects people’s privacy and security. Going forward, we’re going to provide updates to people in the Status tab so people hear from WhatsApp directly.”
In a way we get what WhatsApp are trying to do, by explaining their intent in Status updates, they are hoping that more people will see it instead of reading it from news publications or going to their website. Whether or not this will make a difference remains to be seen, but in the meantime, the company’s competitors are certainly gaining traction.
WhatsApp has since announced that they will be delaying the proposed changes and will be using the time to try and reassure users that the changes, for the most part, won’t affect them too much. The company has reiterated that the changes doesn’t mean that they get to read in on your conversations, check your logs, and so on, and that it is mostly related to WhatsApp conversations with businesses.
