According to the rumors, Apple is said to be planning the launch of a tracking accessory called the AirTags. This will be similar to tracking accessories made by Tile, where users can attach it to objects like a bag and use their smartphones to keep track of it and be alerted when it is removed from its location.
One of the alleged advantages is that the AirTags will use UWB instead of regular Bluetooth, which is said to improve accuracy, but it seems that Tile won’t be taking this lying down. According to a report from TechCrunch, they have heard from their sources that Tile is apparently looking to launch its own UWB-based tracking accessory as well to compete with the AirTags.
In terms of design, these new UWB models will look similar to the current design, so the changes will be mostly internal. The publication also got a look at the concept art of the Tile app and it seems that augmented reality could be used to help locate the missing item. This rumored tracker is said to be launched this year, but when exactly and how much it will cost remains to be seen.
The company is also expected to continue selling its regular Bluetooth tracking accessory since UWB isn’t quite as ubiquitous yet, so it seems that users will have a choice. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and how Apple might try to market its own accessory, so check back with us later for more updates.
