Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 Will Make 5G Smartphones More Affordable

Right now, 5G is mostly limited to high-end flagship handsets. There are some mid-rangers, thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 700-series, but what about the low-end market? What about those who can’t afford flagships or even mid-rangers? Qualcomm wants to cover that market as well and has since announced the Snapdragon 480.

This is the latest chipset from the company and given its model designation, it is clear that the 480 will not be powering the flagships of 2021. However, it does mean that we can look forward to seeing more lower-end smartphones come with 5G capabilities. Granted, 5G still isn’t quite as widely-available as we would like, but it’s a good start and hopefully we’ll be seeing more smartphone makers adopt the chipset.

According to Kedar Kondap, vice president of Qualcomm’s product management, “Qualcomm Technologies continues to accelerate 5G commercialization globally to make 5G smartphones more accessible, especially as people worldwide continue to connect remotely. The Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform will exceed OEM’s and consumer’s expectations in delivering high- and mid-tier features at an affordable price.”

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G will be built on the 8nm process and will feature the use of the company’s Kryo 460 CPU clocked up to 2GHz. It will also sport the Adreno 619 GPU and will also support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology, along with 120fps FHD+ displays.
