Speaking on the Major Nelson podcast, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that the company was doing everything they can to try and churn out as many units as possible, but due to physical and engineering limitations, there’s really only so many that can be built at a time, but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t trying to do something about it.
According to Spencer, “I get some people [asking], ‘why didn’t you build more? Why didn’t you start earlier? Why didn’t you ship them earlier?’ It’s really just down to physics and engineering. We’re not holding them back, we’re building them as fast as we can. We have all the assembly lines going. I was on the phone last week with Lisa Su at AMD, ‘how do we get more?’ So it’s something that we’re constantly working on.”
That being said, Microsoft did previously warn that shortages of the Xbox Series X would persist until at least April of 2021, so if you were hoping to get one soon, you’ll need to move fast and try and nab units when available, or you’ll have to wait a few more months before supply starts to normalize.
