The winters can be brutal for people who are homeless and do not have a warm place to go and stay. This is rather unfortunate, but it seems that over in the German city of Ulm, there exists capsules which are powered by solar energy that have been designed to help the homeless stay warm and give them shelter.
These capsules, known as Ulmer Nests, are made out of wood and steel and are designed to fit two people inside of it. It protects people from both the cold and the rain, and thanks to its solar panels, they are essentially self-sustaining. There is even a radio network built into it to say the people inside of it can communicate with others even if they have no mobile signal or data.
These capsules are also linked to a social worker who will be alerted whenever the capsules are opened. The idea is that when the alerts will let a social worker know that there is someone who might be in there, and they can go and check on them in the morning and encourage them to use homeless services if they haven’t done so already.
The capsules are also cleaned and maintained by charity group, Caritas Ulm-Alb-Donau, so ensure that they can then be reused the following night.
