Obviously this will be damaging to companies like Facebook and Google who rely on this information to serve up personalized ads, so it’s understandable that they aren’t thrilled by these changes. So much so that a report from The Information (paywall) has suggested that Facebook might be looking to file an antitrust lawsuit against Apple.
However, the report goes on to note that there is also a chance that this might not happen because there is internal resistance amongst Facebook employees against it. If that were the case, Facebook could instead change their lawsuit to focus on Apple’s in-app payment service, which they allege makes it harder to compete against Apple for gaming, messaging, and shopping.
Facebook had previously spoken up against the tracking feature, claiming that these changes could end up hurting smaller businesses. Apple had also responded, claiming that they are standing up for their users.
