When it comes to email, it’s hard not to associate it with Gmail. Almost everyone has a Gmail address, even if you don’t necessarily use it, and it is one of the largest (free) email services around. Could the day ever arrive where Gmail is overtaken by someone else? Perhaps, and could that company be Zoom?
Maybe, maybe not, but apparently they want to try anyway. According to a report from The Information (paywall), it seems that Zoom is preparing to launch its own email and calendar services to complement its video conferencing platform. In a way it actually makes sense, because having a Zoom email and calendar will make it a lot easier for users to sync up meetings automatically, instead of having to manually enter it into other calendar platforms like Gmail.
The report goes on to claim that this won’t be your run-of-the-mill email service and will apparently be “next-gen” (whatever that’s supposed to mean), meaning that it won’t just copy what email providers like Gmail or Yahoo are doing right now. This email service is rumored for a launch in 2021, but whether or not it’ll be good enough remains to be seen.
In the meantime, what do you think of a potentially new email service provider? If Zoom were to launch an email service, do you think that this is something you might subscribe to?
