iOS 14.3 Released With ProRAW Support

One of the reasons why some professional photographers love capturing images in the RAW format is because it gives them more flexibility when it comes to making edits. This is versus other formats like JPEG which might have already been processed and compressed, thus already applying certain effects that you might not want.

For iPhone shooters, you’ll be pleased to learn that Apple has since released the iOS 14.3 update which finally brings native RAW support to the company’s recently released iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models.

If you’re hearing about this for the first time, Apple announced at its iPhone event that its Pro models will support the company’s ProRAW format. This is basically the RAW format, except that it’s Apple’s own take on it. Prior to this, there are some third-party apps that did support RAW capture on the iPhone, but ProRAW is an official feature.

That being said, unlike actual RAW images captured by cameras, Apple’s ProRAW actually does some slight processing so it might not be 100% true RAW, but for the most part, users can expect the same kind of post-processing editing that you might expect from a regular RAW image.

We should also note that ProRAW images are rather large in size, with Apple claiming that each ProRAW capture is about 25MB, so it can fill up your iPhone’s storage pretty fast if you’re not being discerning with your shots.
