One of the new features that Apple introduced with its latest iPhones is a new “format” called ProRAW, although to be fair, it’s not really a new format, but rather it is based on the RAW image format. Some had initially wondered about it, and whether or not it would only usable between iOS and Mac devices, but it turns out that won’t be the case.
According to a tweet by Tim Johnsen, a team member at Instagram’s iOS division, it seems that Instagram will now support ProRAW images. What this means is that users who choose to capture images in ProRAW will be able to directly upload them to Instagram’s platform instead of having to convert it to a different format like PNG or JPG.

At the moment, it is unclear what the support means because according to Johnsen, it seems that users will not be able to edit ProRAW images in the Instagram app. Instead, users will need to edit it using a different app, like Apple’s own built-in image editor, or Lightroom, before they upload it to Instagram.
Perhaps Instagram will make some changes to its built-in editor in the future to support the editing of RAW (and ProRAW) image files, but for now, Instagram merely supports uploading of ProRAW images and allowing for it to display correctly.
