By today, by all accounts, TikTok should have been banned in the US. However, it looks like the company is enjoying a temporary stay of execution. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems that the US Department of Commerce will not be pushing through the order that would have forced TikTok to shut down in the US.
According to the Department of Commerce, they cite a preliminary injunction that a judge in Philadelphia had granted TikTok back in October, where a group of TikTok influencers had come together and filed a lawsuit, claiming that ban would have resulted in a detrimental effect on their businesses.
The agency goes on to add that they will not be enforcing the order “pending further legal developments”. That being said, TikTok is not completely in the clear just yet. TikTok is involved in at least two legal cases that would see it banned, so while it might have avoided one temporarily, there is still the other to contend with.
Plus, the preliminary injunction is not expected to hold indefinitely, which means short of the bans being rescinded in its entirety, there is still a chance that TikTok could ultimately end up being forced to shut down in the US, but for now, TikTok users can go ahead and continue using the app and its services.
