Workman says that back in 2017, she downloaded an app called Jackpot Mania and began utilizing the in-app purchases to purchase coins (the game’s in-game currency) that would allow her to keep playing and also give her the chance of winning free coins so that she could enjoy the game for a longer period of time. This resulted in her spending over $3,000 over the course of half a year.
She has since filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the company “promotes, enables, and profits” from illegal gambling apps on the App Store. The complaint reads, “Apple is not some minor or incidental participant in these illegal gambling games. It is the principal promoter and facilitator of the illegal activity. Apple maintains dictatorial control over what apps can be downloaded from the App Store, and the payment method to purchase in-app items.”
The lawsuit is seeking class status and is also seeking a refund of “all money paid through the illegal gambling games described herein”, attorney fees, along with an award for the plaintiff for their “services in this case on behalf of the class”.
