Back in August, Sony announced and released the Imaging Edge Webcam tool for Windows. For those unfamiliar, this is a software that lets you plug your Sony digital camera into your computer and use it as a webcam. The good news is that it looks like the software is now available for macOS as well.
The software is essentially the same as the Windows version, where as long as you have a compatible Sony camera, all you need to do is connect a camera to your Mac computer, and you should be able to use it as a webcam with your favorite video conferencing software almost immediately.
Prior to this, those who wanted to use a digital camera as a webcam had to find workarounds through third-party software which might not be as user-friendly. In some instances, they would even need to purchase additional accessories like a capture card, and given that not everyone needs one, it just created extra obstacles.
Given that the pandemic doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, more people are turning to video conferencing for work and school, so having a good quality camera could help improve the experience, and could also be a good way of using your digital camera now that we don’t get to travel around that much.
