At its core, Apple’s new MagSafe charger is really a wireless charging system. While it was designed for the iPhone 12 in mind, Apple does note that it will charge older iPhones that support wireless charging technology, but even then, it seems that even if you own an older iPhone, MagSafe might not be for you.
This is because according to a video uploaded to YouTube channel Max Tech, it was found that while MagSafe does work and charge older iPhones, it charges it at an insanely slow speed of less than 2W, which is almost unusable unless you don’t mind waiting for hours for your iPhone to charge.
This is strange because according to Apple, MagSafe on the iPhone 12 will allow it to charge at speeds of up to 15W, while for other Qi-compatible devices, it will charge at speeds of 7.5W, so we’re not sure how come for Max Tech, it was charging under 2W. It is unclear why this is the case, or if there could be some kind of hardware defect or software issue that’s causing the super slow charge.
Either way, for now it seems that if you want to wirelessly charge your non-iPhone 12 iPhone, you might be better off seeking third-party alternatives that will most likely charge faster than 2W.
