At Apple’s event today, the company has taken the wraps off their brand new iPhone 12 lineup. It seems that the rumors were right because Apple has indeed announced four new models in the iPhone 12 series, which includes the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro, and last but not least, the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
This is possibly the most variants that we’ve seen in an iPhone lineup to date, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing because it means that there should be an iPhone that is suited for everyone.
Design
In terms of design, it seems that Apple will be revisiting an older design like the iPhone 5, where it features flat sides versus the curved edges of the newer iPhone models, which some might actually appreciate as it makes it easier to hold and will be less likely to slip out of your hands. While all iPhone 12 models will sport a similar-ish design, one of the main differences between the Pro and non-Pro models is that the Pro models will sport PVD coated stainless steel bands and will be offered in different finish options.
Apple has also introduced a new glass cover for the iPhone 12 which they’re calling “Ceramic Shield” which they have developed with Corning. According to Apple, this Ceramic Shield screen adds a crystallization step during the development process that will improve on the toughness of the display, while keeping it clear.
Apple is boasting that this is tougher than any smartphone glass in the market today, and will apparently feature 4x better drop performance, although this will need to be put to the test which we imagine many YouTubers are already getting ready for.
The displays will differ across the models, with the iPhone 12 mini sporting a 5.4-inch display, while the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro will come with a 6.1-inch display, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will come with a 6.7-inch display, making it Apple’s largest iPhone to date.
Performance And Connectivity
Under the hood, the iPhone 12 will be powered by Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset which initially debuted with the iPad Air. It is built on the 5nm process which helped to boost performance while also being efficient. The A14 Bionic will feature a 6-core CPU that Apple claims is 50% faster than any smartphone chipset today.
There is a built-in 4-core GPU, which Apple is also boasting is the fastest mobile GPU that offers 50% faster processing and can offer a console gaming experience on your smartphone. Apple is also offering 5G across the board, with the company boasting that the iPhone 12 mini is the smallest 5G smartphone to date.
Cameras
In terms of cameras, Apple will be using a dual camera setup on the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models will utilize a triple camera setup that looks similar to the iPhone 11 Pro models, but with some differences.
With the iPhone 12 Pro, the phone will come with a seven-element lens for the Wide camera module, and combined with the f/1.6 aperture, will boast a 27% improvement in terms of low-light performance. The Ultra-Wide camera will also feature a 120-degree field of video, and a 52mm focal length for the Telephoto camera.
As for the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it will boast slightly better camera hardware with a 47% larger sensor on the Wide camera that the company claims will boost an 87% improvement in low-light photography. They have also bumped the Telephoto camera to a 65mm focal length and 5x optical zoom to allow photographers to get in a more tight shot.
That being said, this does not mean that Apple is neglecting the cameras on the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12. These two models will sport a dual camera design with computational photography features, thanks to the use of the A14 Bionic chipset. They also support Apple’s Deep Fusion technology that will help improve the photos taken by the rear-facing cameras as well as the front-facing cameras.
