The good news for those who have bought or are buying the iPhone 12 is that users will have the option of enabling WiFi hotspots over 5GHz. For those who are unfamiliar with the distinction between 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands is that the former offers a wider range and can cover more ground, albeit at the cost of speed.
The latter will have a shorter range than 2.4GHz, but the upside is that the speeds it offers will be faster. By allowing the iPhone 12 to offer 5GHz WiFi hotspots, it means that users who are using it to connect their laptops or iPads to WiFi will be able to take advantage of the faster speeds that 5GHz bands offer.
Given that hotspots aren’t necessarily meant to power an entire home and are usually used side-by-side with a laptop or tablet, the range offered by 5GHz bands shouldn’t be an issue. Users should take note that using 5GHz will be enabled by default whenever you turn on the hotspot feature, so unless you need to turn it back down to 2.4GHz, there is no action needed on your end.
