The good news is that according to MacRumors, they managed to obtain an internal Verizon slide in which it says that Apple will enable 5G in dual SIM mode through a software update later this year. The slide also notes that for its 5G customers using the iPhone 12 using the eSIM, they will need to remove the physical SIM if they wish to use 5G.
For those unfamiliar, the previous report claimed that if a user were to use dual SIMs in the iPhone 12, the phone would only connect to LTE, not 5G. In order to use 5G, users would have to disable one of the SIM card slots, either the eSIM or the physical SIM. Like we said, it is unclear why this is the case and we may never know the reason behind this move, but luckily it doesn’t seem to be a hardware issue and a software update should address that.
We’re not sure when this update will come, but in the meantime for dual SIM users who want to take advantage of 5G, this is what you’ll have to do for now.
