Apple Just Acquire A Company Whose AI Can Figure Out What’s In Your Videos

One of the features of Google Photos is that Google leverages AI to help users identify people and objects in their photos. Given the number of photos we might take with our smartphone camera, it can sometimes be rather difficult for us to find what we are looking for, and that’s what the AI is used for.

Apple has a similar feature, but it seems that the company is hoping to bolster their efforts as according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it appears that Apple has acquired a company called Vilynx earlier this year. This is a startup that has been training AI to study videos to understand its contents through visual, audio, or even text cues.

The company’s AI has been used to help create tags for videos that make them more searchable. Apple has since confirmed the acquisition with a boilerplate statement that reads, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

It is unclear what Apple plans to do with their acquisition, but like we said, maybe they’re hoping to bolster its Photos app by applying more advanced AI to help identify photos and videos so that users will be able to search for things more easily. These types of acquisitions are typically applied in a more subtle way so even if Apple were to integrate Vilynx’s tech, we might not necessarily know about it.
