Following some leaks and rumors, just last week LG teased that they had a new smartphone in the works. Now it looks like the handset has since been confirmed as LG has announced that the smartphone, dubbed LG Wing, is in development and will be the first phone to fall under LG’s Explorer Project.

According to LG, the Explorer Project is the company’s way of exploring new mobile device ideas that will challenge established user norms. The company also says, “LG’s boldest, newest smartphone will deliver a new and different form factor and mobile experience that would be impossible to create with conventional smartphones.”

For those who are unfamiliar, the LG Wing is an upcoming smartphone that will feature a swivel out display, or at least that’s based on the rumors. While swivel out displays aren’t new (hello Sidekick), it will be a more modern take and will allow users to enjoy the shape and design of existing smartphones, while also offering up an expanded experience with the secondary display.

While we can’t say for sure that the LG Wing will be a smashing success, it is a rather interesting design that could help break the monotony of today’s smartphones. LG will be officially announcing the handset on the 14th of September, so check back with us then for more updates.
