Qualcomm has recently announced their latest modem in the form of the Snapdragon X60. This makes it the company’s third-gen 5G modem and one of the features is that it is built on the 5nm process. This means that the modem will have a smaller footprint compared to the X55 which was built on the 7nm process.
What this could mean for the iPhone is that it could end up being smaller/thinner due to the smaller chipset. Alternatively, Apple could maintain the size of the iPhone but they could also use the space to fill it with other hardware features. That being said, there is no guarantee that the X60 will find its way into the 2021 iPhones, but like we said, given that Apple could be working with Qualcomm for a while, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if it did.
In the meantime, we have heard the rumors that Apple could be working on their own 5G modems, but it is said that these modems could still be quite a ways from it being officially announced and used.
