Samsung To Begin Production Of 16GB LPDDR5 RAM Chips For Smartphones

Way back in the day, it would be rare to see smartphones with 1GB of RAM. However, these days, seeing phones with 8GB of RAM has become the norm, and it looks like 16GB of RAM could soon become the new standard, at least that’s what Samsung is hoping for with their newly mass produced 16GB RAM chipsets.

The company has announced that they will soon be mass producing 16GB LPDDR5 RAM chipsets that they are hoping will find their way into premium smartphones. As it stands, there are quite a number of smartphones in the market today that come with 16GB of RAM, and the recently-launched Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is one of the phones that is taking advantage of Samsung’s new hardware.

According to Samsung, the new RAM chips will offer up to 5,500Mbps speeds, making it about 30% faster than LPDDR4X chipsets. It will also be more efficient compared to the previous-gen chips which means that they should also be less battery intensive. Samsung does not mention which companies will be utilizing their new 16GB LPDDR5 RAM chips, but don’t be surprised if we start seeing more flagship phones launched this year and next that will be taking advantage of that.
