The good news is that if you have fallen victim to one of these tech support call scams, the FTC has announced that they will begin the process of sending out a refund of $1.7 million to those who have fallen prey to these scams.
According to the FTC, “The FTC will begin providing 57,960 refunds averaging about $30 each to victims of the scheme. Most recipients will get their refunds via PayPal, but those who receive checks should deposit or cash their checks within 60 days, as indicated on the check.” For those who are unfamiliar, this tech support scam involves the scammer calling the victim and claiming that their computers were infected with malware and security breaches.
The scammers then try to convince their targets to purchase tech support services as a means to resolve this issue. While we doubt that it would be impossible to put a complete stop to scams, hopefully as time goes on, people will become more educated about these scams and will stop falling prey to them.
