This is according to a report from IT Home (via GizChina) who alleges that multiple companies, Apple included, are working on Gallium Nitride (GaN) based chargers. This will be a USB-C charger that apparently supports fast-charging for up to 65 watts, and that these companies are planning on releasing them this year.
While chargers, at least on the surface, all seem to be more or less the same, the move to GaN based chargers will definitely have an impact on the industry. This is because it is due to the tech which is different from silicon chargers, where it uses fewer components. This in turn would allow companies to create smaller chargers that are more efficient.
It is also said that GaN chargers have the ability to adjust the power output automatically depending on the device that is connected to it. This means that if Apple were to release such a charger, it could adjust the output if an iPhone is connected to it, or if a MacBook were connected to it, and so on. Take it with a grain of salt for now and hopefully we’ll have more details to share in the near future.
