OnePlus has been teasing that they are working on a 120Hz display. Whether or not it will make it into the OnePlus 8 remains to be seen, but they are definitely working on something. In a recent post made on Twitter, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau shared a demo video which showed off the company’s 120Hz display.
According to Lau, he claims that OnePlus has created a custom MEMC chip that will be able to scale regular 30Hz videos up to 120Hz, meaning that basically any video you watch, even if it wasn’t shot with 120Hz displays in mind, will still be able to take advantage of the company’s display.
In a way, this is similar to how companies have been creating technologies to upscale Full HD videos to 4K in a smarter way, except that we’re talking about refresh rates instead of resolution. OnePlus is currently utilizing 90Hz displays in its flagship smartphones, although based on the company’s teasers, we can expect to see a OnePlus phone come with a 120Hz display in the future.
If you’ve seen high-quality TVs, you’re no stranger to MEMC. We’ve created a custom MEMC chip that can push ordinary 30fps video up to 120, so any video gets the full advantage of our 120Hz Fluid Display. pic.twitter.com/YPD3fw5uOn

The jury is still out on whether or not it will be in the OnePlus 8, but with the phone expected to be announced in the near future, we should have more details soon. In the meantime, you can check out the demo video above.
