It should be noted that rumors of a live-action series of One Piece has been making its rounds for a while now, but this is the first official confirmation that we’ve gotten. The series will consist of 10 episodes, although we’re not sure if this will be a one-off thing based on a particular story arc, or if it will be the first season and that there will be more to follow, assuming it does well.
According to Netflix, they have “partnered with Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha to bring this pirate adventure story from Japan to audiences around the world. The original manga, written by Eiichiro Oda, has captivated fans for many years and sold over 460 million copies.” There is currently no word on who has been cast as whom, and when it will be released.
Given the somewhat fantastical nature of various mangas/animes, it will be interesting to see how it will be interpreted in a live-action series, and whether or not it will be able to remain faithful to the tone and story of the series that is beloved by fans around the world.
