Notchless iPhone With In-Display Touch ID Rumored For 2020

While Apple’s Face ID works like a charm, there are certain disadvantages to it over Touch ID, such as having to look at your phone to unlock it, which sometimes isn’t as convenient. This is why we’re pretty excited to learn that according to a report from LetsGoDigital, they cite a Credit Suisse presentation which claims that an in-display Touch ID could be coming to 2020’s iPhone.

In addition to an in-display Touch ID sensor, the bank’s presentation goes on to predict that Apple could even make 2020’s iPhone notchless, where the TrueDepth camera system and front-facing camera will be embedded under the screen of the phone. While an in-display sensor has been rumored for 2020, this is the first we’re hearing about a notchless iPhone.

That being said, the idea behind a notchless smartphone isn’t new. Samsung had previously demonstrated that this could work by placing the camera under the display of the phone. However, the fact that it has yet to make its debut suggests that maybe it could be trickier than we think to get it to work.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had also previously predicted that an in-display Touch ID sensor might only arrive in 2021, and given his track record, there is a good chance we could be right versus Credit Suisse’s report. In any case, given that these are just predictions, it’s probably best not to get your hopes up just yet and to take it with a grain of salt for now.
