Back in the day before smartphones and tablets existed, companies like Nintendo and Sony thrived with handheld consoles like the Nintendo DS and the PS Vita. While Nintendo is continuing to churn out mobile gaming devices like the Switch and Switch Lite, Sony seems to be done with the PS Vita.
However, if you were hoping that maybe Sony was working on a successor to the PS Vita, think again because during an interview with Game Informer, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO, Jim Ryan, pretty much confirmed that the PS Vita is no longer a business venture that they are no longer in.
Ryan was quoted as saying, “PlayStation Vita was brilliant in many ways, and the actual gaming experience was great, but clearly it’s a business that we’re no longer in now.” Ryan’s statement doesn’t come as a surprise, especially when you consider the fact that it was just earlier this year that Sony officially ended the production of the console.
It is interesting that Sony is no longer interested in pursuing it, especially with Nintendo seemingly doubling down on their mobile gaming efforts. Perhaps one day Sony could return to handheld consoles, but for now, you probably don’t want to hold your breath.
