Companies such as Blizzard have taken certain measures to try and pull back from loot boxes, and now Psyonix, the developer behind Rocket League, have announced their answer to loot boxes in the form of “Blueprints”. Now, one of the main criticisms of loot boxes is that you don’t know what you’re getting, and thus you could spend money and end up with something you don’t want, need, or already have.
However, Psyonix believes that Blueprints will solve that, where according to the developer, “After you play a match of Rocket League, you’ll have a chance to obtain a Blueprint; a new type of drop that will replace Crates. When you receive a Blueprint, it will show you exactly what item you can create from it, for a set price.”
Basically, Blueprints will still feature the random nature of loot boxes, except that while it is randomly generated, you will be able to see exactly what it is before you buy it, meaning that gamers will only need to spend money on what they want. It does seem like a pretty good alternative and we wonder if more developers will adopt such a system in the future.
