Dubbed Linksys Aware, this is a new subscription service by Linksys that can be used to detect intruders in your home. How will it do that, especially since the Velop routers do not come with a camera? Apparently, it will work through WiFi. Basically the routers will attempt to use WiFi signals to detect intruders, and when it does detect an intruder, it will alert users on their smartphones.
Linksys does not detail how exactly its system works, but it sounds like whenever it detects that the WiFi signal changes, it could mean that there is an intruder. Basically, our routers give off WiFi signals that are picked up by our smartphones and computers. While invisible to the naked eye, a person walking through a home will cause changes to the way the signal is being projected, which Linksys has since taken advantage of to use as an intruder alert system.
If you are interested in taking advantage of this new feature, you will need to update your router’s firmware and download the accompanying smartphone app. You will also need to subscribe to the Linksys Aware service that will offer a free 90-day trial, after which it will be priced at $2.99 a month or $24.99 for an entire year.
