Google Launches New Titan Key With USB-C

Last year, Google released their Titan security keys. For those who are unfamiliar, these Titan security keys are plugged into devices like our smartphones and computers. It acts as a physical way of authenticating users when trying to log into websites and services, adding an extra layer of security over the traditional password system.

Google had two models available that relied on USB-A and Bluetooth, but given that a lot of computers and devices are starting to move to USB-C, the good news for users is that Google has since announced a new USB-C version of the Titan key. It is expected to be available for purchase starting tomorrow for $40.

However, it seems that when creating the USB-C version of Titan, Google decided to drop support for NFC. If you never really bothered with the NFC functionality on the Titan, then we guess it’s not a big deal. Other than the dropping of NFC, it seems that the key will function like its predecessors.

It will be compatible with a variety of devices and platforms, such as Android, Chrome OS, macOS, and Windows. If you’re looking for iOS support, then you will need to purchase the Bluetooth version of Titan and install the Smart Lock app on your device, despite the fact that some newer iOS devices, like the iPad Pro, already comes with a USB-C port.
