When will that be? It’s really anyone’s guess, but according to a new report from Fast Company, apparently Apple is aiming to launch their own 5G modems in 2022. In fact, the report claims that Apple is really hustling to try and make that happen, but a source for the publication tells them that it might not necessarily be possible.
This is because following the completion of the design followed by fabrication, there needs to be extensive testing still needs to be done along with certification, network optimization, and the likes. It also needs to be approved by the FCC. All of this takes time and according to Fast Company’s source, a launch in 2023 might be a more realistic one.
That being said, Apple did acquire Intel’s modem business for $1 billion which could help fast track the company by leveraging Intel’s patents and experience. In any case, 2022 or even 2023 is still a few years away so we’ll just have to remain patient for now.
