Turn the clock back a few years ago, you would be hardpressed to find a streaming service besides Netflix or Hulu. However, these days customers are being spoilt for choice where they are being presented with a ton of options. Amazon has gotten into the game, along with Apple, and next month, Disney will also be launching their own streaming service.
This is why it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to learn that AMC Theatres has decided to toss their hat into the ring as well. However, while we’re not surprised to learn that AMC Theatres wants in on the action, it is actually a rather interesting move. This is because streaming services and theaters have been at odds with each other due to how movies are being released.
However, that’s where AMC Theatres will differ. The new service, dubbed AMC Theatres On Demand, won’t be offering a streaming service similar to Netflix or Hulu. Instead, it will be similar to iTunes where movies will be available for rent or purchase. The company will offer a library of older movies, but will also offer newer releases after they have completed their run in theatres.
In a statement made by Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Theatres, “Through the launch of AMC Theatres On Demand, we can reach movie lovers directly and make it easy for them to access films digitally.”
