In fact, to celebrate the Walkman turning 40 years old, Sony has launched at IFA what they are calling the 40th Anniversary Walkman, but it’s not what you think. If you were thinking that the company was going to debut a portable cassette player, think again because the device is essentially a modern day media player housed in a case that resembles the Walkman from back in the day.
According to Sony, the design is inspired by the TPS-L2. It features a 3.6-inch HD display, a USB-C charging port, and also boasts a battery life of 26 hours. It will also come with a special cassette tape user interface and screensaver to make you think that you’re still listening to a cassette tape. It also supports WiFi and is powered by Android.
There is no word on when the device will arrive stateside, but it will be launching in Australia and Europe this December where it will be priced at AUD$599 and €440/£400 respectively.
