According to the analyst, he claims that instead of OLED, Apple could instead turn to the use of mini-LEDs. Kuo believes that there are a couple of reasons as to why Apple could use mini-LEDs instead of OLED. One of those reasons is that mini-LEDs could help avoid burn-in issues. Another reason is that they might be easier to produce compared to OLED.
Last but not least, it could help Apple reduce their dependence on Samsung, who for now supplies Apple with the majority of their OLED panels. Instead, Apple could potentially turn to LG for their mini-LED needs. In terms of the advantages mini-LEDs have over OLED, they could potentially allow for thinner and lighter devices, offer a wide color gamut, higher contrast, and HDR.
As for which Apple devices could receive the new hardware, Kuo claims that it will find its way to “high-end” iPads and MacBooks in late 2020 or mid-2021, so it seems that we won’t be seeing it anytime soon.
