New Tariffs Means Apple’s Products Just Got 10% More Expensive

The trade war between the US and China is still ongoing. We imagine that it will be a while before things smoothen out, but unfortunately, in the meantime, it looks like Apple might have gotten caught in the crossfires because US President Donald Trump just announced a 10% import tax.

This import tax means that any product coming from China into the US will see a 10% hike in costs, which we imagine will probably translate into additional costs to customers since companies will probably not want to shoulder it, or at least not in its entirety. Apple had previously warned that these tariffs pretty much cover every Apple product across the board.

According to Apple, who warned US trade representative Robert Lighthizer, “The proposed tariff list covers all of Apple’s major products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and AppleTV, as well as the parts and batteries used to repair products in the United States. The proposed tariffs also cover accessories that Apple makes for these devices, such as monitors and keyboards.”

What’s ironic is that it wasn’t too long ago that Apple launched a bunch of updated MacBook laptops where the prices of the SSDs had been decreased. These new tariffs, assuming Apple doesn’t absorb the costs, could potentially bring prices back up. How much this will affect consumers remains to be seen as the tariffs are only expected to go into effect next month.
