The report claims that Apple will apparently be introducing a time-of-flight sensor to the 2020 iPad Pro’s camera. For those unfamiliar, a ToF sensor is used to measure the distance between the sensor and its subject. It is sometimes used for augmented reality where it helps provide better scaling and perspective.
If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it is because analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously predicted that Apple’s 2020 iPhones could come with a similar sensor. However, with the iPad Pro reportedly due for a refresh in the earlier part of 2020, there is a good chance that the iPad Pro could beat the iPhone to the punch.
Apple’s iPads have typically been positioned as productivity devices where they can be used for drawing, photo editing, typing up documents, and so on. However, the potential inclusion of ToF sensors means that it could be used on an industrial scale as well for 3D mapping, for example. In any case since nothing has been confirmed, it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
