Netflix did confirm recently that it would be launching mobile-only streaming plans in select markets. India was to be one of the first markets where this plan was going to be launched. Netflix is now offering users in the country a $3 plan which allows them to stream content from the service on their mobile devices only. The plan costs the equivalent of $3 per month.

Netflix users in India are still able to get the existing Basic, Standard, and Premium plans as before. The new Mobile plan offers streaming in SD resolution to one smartphone or tablet at a time for the equivalent of $3 per month. It will also allow Smart Downloads so that users have more flexibility when it comes to watching their favorite content.

“Our members in India watch more on their mobiles than members anywhere else in the world- and they love to download our shows and films,” said Ajay Arora, Director, Product Innovation, Netflix.

The company highlighted a report which mentions that Indians spend 30 percent of their phone time and more than 70 percent of their mobile data on entertainment. With Netflix heavily investing in original content for the Indian market, it makes sense that it wants to lower the barrier of entry for those interesting in paying for Netflix.
