Your browser may have thrown up the “502 Bad Gateway” error if you have been trying to access some websites this morning. Quite a few have been affected by a massive Cloudflare outage that has been going on for a couple of hours. The outage was confirmed by Cloudflare through its System Status page as well.
Co-founder & CEO of Cloudflare Matthew Prince also tweeted out that the team was aware of the issues that are impacting the entire network. He also mentioned that the team was working on “getting to the bottom of what’s going on.”
He later said that a massive spike in CPU usage caused the primary and backup systems to fall over and this impacted all services. There had been some speculation of a widespread DDoS attack on the network. Prince mentioned that there’s no evidence as yet that this was due to a coordinated attack of some kind but the team is still digging to find the root cause of this outage.
Cloudflare has also confirmed that a fix has been implemented for the issue and that the results are now being monitored. This means that normal service should soon be restored to the sites that were impacted by the outage.
