Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon 855 Plus which is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform which was introduced earlier this year. The company has said that this chipset will be present in mobile devices due in the second half of this year. ASUS has confirmed that its ROG Phone 2 will be the first to feature the Snapdragon 855 Plus.
This is hardly surprising as the Snapdragon 855 Plus has been billed as the best option for gaming smartphones. The original ROG Phone will be due for a refresh in the coming months so it would make sense for the company to go for the chipset which offers slightly more performance.
As far as the performance is concerned, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is clocked at 2.96GHz compared to the Snapdragon 855’s 2.84GHz. The company also says that the GPU performance has been improved by 15 percent.
ASUS hasn’t confirmed anything more about the handset itself at this point. However, one can expect that it would retain the 90 hertz AMOLED display and the AirTriggers at the edges of the phone which basically act as bumper buttons for games.
Just how noticeable these improvements will be when this chipset is actually compared in a mobile device alongside the Snapdragon 855 remains to be seen. We’ll only find this out when the new devices become available in the coming months.
