In a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, the publication is claiming that Apple is allegedly in “advanced talks” to acquire Intel’s modem business, where they could potentially end up paying as much as $1 billion for it. This is not the first time we’ve heard these rumors, where back in June, it was reported that Apple was still very much into the idea of buying Intel’s modem business.
For those who are wondering why Intel is looking to offload their modem business, this came on the heels of the company announcing that they would be halting development on its 5G modem. The company was originally supposed to supply 5G modems to Apple, but this was later cancelled when Apple and Qualcomm settled their lawsuit with each other, thus allowing Apple to source from Qualcomm again.
To date, Apple makes its own chipsets and the company also has a reputation for trying to do as much by themselves as possible, so it’s not surprising that modems could be next.
