NBA broadcasts are about to get an upgrade. Verizon has announced that it has reached an agreement with the National Basketball Association to create a high-speed network which will connect all 29 arenas that host NBA teams with Verizon’s fiber network in order to provide fans with high quality video. This improved network capability will enable the NBA to offer 1080p resolution on all broadcasts while also being able to support up to thirty new cameras being installed in the arenas.
Verizon explains that each of the 29 NBA arenas will be connected with two diversely routed 100G fiber circuits which will increase the network’s bandwidth by tenfold with full redundancies so that fans never miss a moment of the game.
This fiber network is going to be managed using Verizon’s Wavelength Services with each arenas being connected to its network hubs in Newark and Atlanta. There’s also going to be a dedicated virtual network operation center in Dulles that will be operated by Verizon Media during game time in order to monitor real-time video traffic quality and data across the entire network.
Verizon says that this new video distribution network and fiber connectivity is going to be live starting in the first half of next year.
