Snapchat’s New Gender Swap Filter Used To Nab A Cop Looking For Underage Sex

Every now and then, Snapchat comes up with some pretty unique and fun filters that goes viral. More recently, the company has created a gender swap filter in which when used, it will be able to make guys look like girls, and girls look like guys. It’s a fun filter, although somewhat controversial, but recently it has gained attention for nabbing someone trying to have sex with an underage girl.

In a report from the NBC Bay Area, a college student by the name of Ethan (whose last name was withheld to protect his identity) created a Tinder account and used a photo of himself with the filter, giving him the appearance of a girl. His profile eventually caught the attention of a San Mateo police officer by the name of Robert Davies, who then propositioned the persona he created by asking, “Are you down to have some fun tonight?”

Ethan said he informed Davies that he was 16, but it did not seem to bother him. Both Ethan and Davies exchanged messages over the course of 12 hours, with Ethan dragging out the conversation to try and get more information, screenshotting his conversations along the way. He eventually had enough evidence and showed it to Crime Stoppers, which ultimately led to Davies’ arrest.

He has also since been put on paid administrative leave while facing a charge of contacting a minor to commit a felony. In a statement made by San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer, “This alleged conduct, if true, is in no way a reflection of all that we stand for as a Department, and is an affront to the tenets of our department and our profession as a whole.”
