The OnePlus 7 Pro’s 90Hz Display Isn’t Always Displaying At 90Hz

One of the key highlights of the OnePlus 7 Pro is that the phone comes with a 90Hz display. This makes the phone stand out from the majority of the competition as it does offer up a faster refresh rate, a feature that OnePlus was quick to capitalize on. However, as it turns out, the phone’s 90Hz display refresh rate might not be 90Hz all the time.

According to XDA Recognized Contributor C3C076, he discovered that the OnePlus 7 Pro actually offers up three different refresh rates: 60Hz, an “auto” 90Hz refresh rate, and also a hidden “true” 90Hz refresh rate that when enabled, locks the display at 90Hz at all times. This means that by default, the phone is set at the “auto” 90Hz refresh rate which will toggle between 60Hz and 90Hz depending on the task at hand.

When the folks at XDA Developers reached out to OnePlus for clarification, the company claims that when it comes to more intense tasks, the phone will revert back to 60Hz, such as when watching videos, playing large-scale games, and using the camera. However at other times, the phone will use 90Hz.

The company also warned users against activating “true” 90Hz as they claim that it will come at a cost to battery life. It is a bit of a pity that it isn’t fixed at 90Hz all the time, but we suppose if it does mean better battery life, perhaps that might be more important than having a super smooth display.
