The ThinkPad P73 17.3” workstation laptop is probably the most powerful mobile computer that Lenovo has to offer today, as it comes with the latest from Intel and NVIDIA and as the title suggests, a maximum of 128GB of RAM and 6TB of SSD storage.
Not surprisingly, the laptop is more massive (7.5 Lbs) and thicker (25mm) than your typical 17”, but it is very comparable to 17” gaming laptops. In general, people use it as a desktop replacement rather than a consumer-style mobility device such as 13.3” computers.
The ThinkPad P73 packs an incredible punch since there’s an option to buy it with Intel’s 9th-Gen CPU i7/i9 or Xeon (8-core). The memory is not soldered but is composed of four SO-DIMM memory modules (ECC or non-ECC) that could eventually be upgraded, although we’re not sure if the motherboard supports more than 128GB.
On the storage front, the P73 supports RAID-0, RAID-1, and RAID-5 SSD configurations, which means that it has at least three m.2 connectors to attach SSD modules, including Optane ones.
Workstations have powerful GPUs, and the P73 has an NVIDIA RTX 5000 option that is the fastest mobile GPU available today. With thousands of graphics cores, hundreds of AI cores and dozens of ray-tracing cores, this graphics processor can take on any workload you throw at it, including high-end games (after work).
The 17-inch display isn’t just big, but the quality can also be high with a 4K IPS LCD options with higher brightness (usually ~500+ NITs) which is compatible with Dolby Vision HDR. That’s an excellent option for users working on computer rendering or high-end video editing. By the way, the system has stereo speakers which we would be curious to hear.
At the top of the screen, you have two privacy-enabled webcam options: a regular RGB camera, or an RGB+IR camera that allows for secure face unlock.
Given its size, the ThinkPad P73 it boasts a whole lot of ports:
Starting at $1849, the ThinkPad P73 workstation isn’t that expensive in its class, but as you pile up upgrades, the price increases quickly. In the end, if you want this level of performance, consumer-level laptops can often not offer these hardware options. Finally, the NVIDIA Quadro version has drivers that are certified to be optimum for a lot of professional apps.
