Huawei Allowed To Buy Products From U.S. Companies Again

Huawei has had a difficult few weeks after it was effectively blacklisted by the U.S. government which prevented it from doing business from companies in the United States. Any U.S. company would first have to seek the administration’s approval before doing business with Huawei. The ban had massive implications for Huawei as it’s dependent on U.S. companies for things like components and even Android OS for its smartphones. In what appears to be a thaw in the U.S.-China trade ware, Huawei has once again been allowed to purchase products from American companies.

Speaking to reporters after the G20 summit in Japan, President Trump said that he has allowed Huawei to purchase products from U.S. firms again because of requests from “high tech companies” based in America.

“A lot of people are surprised we send and we sell to Huawei a tremendous amount of product that goes into a lot of the various things that they make — and I said that that’s OK, that we will keep selling that product,” he said.

White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow later clarified the president’s comments, adding that Huawei will remain on the blacklist. The reprieve that the president was talking about in Japan simply means that the Commerce Department will now grant more licenses to U.S. companies so that they can sell their products to Huawei, provided that those products pose no threat to national security.
