Towards the end of last month, it was reported that the developers behind Divinity: Original Sin 2 could have been teasing Baldur’s Gate 3. The studio put out a teaser image with the roman numerals “III”, which many had understandably assumed would have been Original Sin 3, but later there was a ton of speculation that it might have been for Baldur’s Gate 3 instead.
Turns out the rumors and speculation were right on the money because Larian Studios has since officially confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 is in development. The studio has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming announcement of the game. Not much is known about the game, but the teaser seems to suggest that the Mind Flayers are expected to play a rather prominent role in the game.
Development of the Baldur’s Gate franchise has been passed around in the recent years. The first two titles including its expansions were developed by BioWare. It was later passed to Snowblind, before the games were remastered under the “Enhanced Edition” titles by Beamdog, before the rumors hit in 2018 that suggested that Larian could be next to pick up on development duties.
The Baldur’s Gate series is widely-regarded as one of the best RPGs to have been created so it will be interesting to see if Larian will be able to carry that forwards. It is unclear if the studio will be adopting the same engine used for its Divinity series, or if there are plans to keep using the Infinity Engine which gave the game its signature look.
