FedEx may have decided to no longer renew Amazon’s contract for its air cargo service but it’s not like Amazon hasn’t already been building its own air cargo logistics network for a few years now. Amazon Air operates a fleet of aircraft that are used exclusively for delivering Amazon parcels. The company has announced today that it’s expanding the Amazon Air fleet with the addition of 15 new cargo airplanes.
Amazon launched this operation back in 2016 to support package delivery and ensure that it can continue to offer customers fast delivery. Hundreds of thousands of packages are transported every day with the Amazon Air network.
Amazon has announced a partnership with GE Capital Aviation Services to lease fifteen Boeing 737-800 cargo aircraft. They will join the five 737-800s that have already been leased from GECAS. Amazon says that the aircraft will fly in the United States out of 20 air gateways of its Amazon Air network.
“These new aircraft create additional capacity for Amazon Air, building on the investment in our Prime Free One-Day program,” said David Clark, SVP of Worldwide Operations at Amazon. He added that Amazon Air is going to have a fleet of 70 aircraft flying in the dedicated air network by 2021.
