One would expect that the U.S. military would have a firm grasp on the number of websites that it runs but that doesn’t seem to be the case, or perhaps they just don’t want to make a figure official. Nevertheless, acting director of the Defense Media Activity at Fort Meade, Maryland, Paul Haverstick, has said that the number of websites run by the Pentagon is “undefined.”
Stars and Stripes reports that Haverstick said during an event last month that the number of websites run by the Pentagon is undefined. For those who are unware, the Defense Media Activity as the military’s multimedia outreach operation.
It handles the publication of official outlets such as Army News, Marines News, Air Force News, and Navy News in addition to communications education for military personnel and civilians. It’s also responsible for providing web development and hosting services for the Department of Defense.
There doesn’t seem to be an official count of the websites that the DMA is responsible for. Its website mentions that it provides support for more than 740 military and Department of Defense websites. However, according to Haverstick, the DMA provides support for “between 2,000 and 5,000” websites. These include the primary sites for the branches of the military in addition to sites and blogs for individual units.
