Many of us have spent countless hours mindlessly playing Solitaire on a Windows-powered computer. The company has bundled this game with its operating system since 1990 so many of us have played the game at least once or twice at some point in our lives. So it’s fitting to see that the game has now been honored by being inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Microsoft first shipped the Solitaire game with Windows 3.0 and it was present in every subsequent version of Windows released after that right up until Windows 8.1. Even though Microsoft removed it from the base level operating system, the game returned in Windows 10 as the company acknowledged that the game had a “devoted following.”
Microsoft Solitaire is now an official member of the World Video Game Hall of Fame. It’s in some prestigious company which includes titles like World of Warcraft, Halo: Combat Evolved, Doom, and Tetris.
The World Video Game Hall of Fame was created in 2015 and it’s overseen by The Strong, an educational institute. It’s located in The National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. New inductees are selected for the World Video Game Hall of Fame every year.
“Microsoft Solitaire demonstrated that there existed a vast market for games that appeal to people of all types, paving the way for the growth of the casual game market,” the Strong Museum said in a statement.
